- My attention span came back. Here’s what I did.
My attention span came back. Here’s what I did.
Yesterday I sat down to write and something felt weird.
I didn’t reach for my phone.
I didn’t get bored after 90 seconds.
I didn’t feel the need to scroll, check, or switch tabs.
I was just… there.
Present. Focused. In it.
And then it hit me:
My attention span came back.
Not overnight.
But because I made one decision a few weeks ago:
I deleted Instagram. YouTube. And Facebook.
Not because those apps are inherently “bad”.
But they were “bad“ for me.
Because I was using them like a slot machine.
Every quiet moment became a hit of noise.
Waiting in line? Scroll.
Waiting for my wife at the store? Scroll.
Pretending to do deep work? Scroll EVEN harder. (I know)
I used to tell myself I needed those apps.
For business. For “research.” For connection.
But the truth?
I was using them to avoid stillness.
To numb.
To kill time and escape the discomfort of doing nothing.
Now?
I still use other social media (you can guess)
But I put my phone in a drawer when I’m working.
Out of reach. Out of mind.
I don’t always win.
But I win way more often than before.
And that’s enough to change how I work, and how I feel about myself.
Here’s the lesson:
You don’t have an attention problem.
You have a distraction access problem.
Delete the apps that own you.
Put the phone out of reach.
Give your brain a chance to breathe.
This could potentially be your life changing break.
To your growth,
Vikko
