Comfort is the New Enemy—Here’s How to Fight Back
From DOTA to reality. Real Fast!
A few days ago, I sent a DOTA 1 reel to an old college friend.
You know, just trying to catch up and relive the good old days.
But things got real. Fast. (note, this is a translation from my native language to English)
Him: “I’ve had bad luck, boss. Two layoffs in a row. I always get affected because I’m the new hire. The jobs I get are always unstable. And of course, the monthly bills keep coming…”
Me: “Have you tried applying to companies like Yondu, Accenture?”
Him: “I want to try Accenture, but I think they require you to go to the office, right? I save more when working from home.”
Me: “It's better to have more options. Even if it’s not work from home, still try. Then, decide later whether to accept or not.”
Him: “I’ll save up first and try applying to BGC. They offer higher salaries there. I’m just scared to stay there, though, haha.”
(BGC or Bonifacio Global City is a prime business district in Manila known for offering higher salaries compared to provincial areas)
Me: “Well, it is scary, that’s true. It’s a risk. What part are you most scared of?”
Him: “I’ve never really lived far from home. And I feel like the lifestyle there is very different. Although I’m used to being independent since I’ve lived alone for several years now.”
This conversation really stuck with me.
Not just because of his situation, but because I’ve seen this story play out too many times.
People staying stuck, clinging to their safety nets, terrified to take a step out of line.
The Comfort Zone Is a Trap (And You Know It)
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Staying in your comfort zone is the worst decision you can make.
It’s tempting, sure.
Safe? Absolutely. But it’s also suffocating your potential.
You’re not growing.
You’re not achieving anything remarkable.
You’re just existing. Stuck.
Think about it—have you ever met someone who achieved something extraordinary by staying comfortable?
Doubt it.
Every real achievement, every story of success, starts with someone stepping out of their comfort zone.
You can float around, stuck in the same place for years, or you can take a calculated risk and change the game.
Stop Being Afraid of Risk
Here’s the thing: most people are more scared of failure than they are of staying stuck. And that’s a recipe for mediocrity.
Yes, I said it—mediocrity.
Because that’s what happens when you refuse to take risks.
You miss out on opportunities, experiences, and growth.
You’re so focused on what could go wrong that you forget about everything that could go right.
But there’s a smarter way to take risks—calculated risks.
That’s where the RRR Method comes in: the Risk-Reward Roadmap.
The RRR Method: Your Wake-Up Call
The RRR Method isn’t just some fluffy tool.
It’s your wake-up call to stop being afraid and start thinking clearly.
It forces you to face the reality of your situation.
Here’s how it works:
Risky Route | Risks Involved | Rewards Expected |
|---|---|---|
Applying for a new job | Job insecurity, unknown work culture | Higher salary, career advancement |
Purchasing a training course | Financial investment, time commitment | New skills, career growth |
Starting a side hustle | Time commitment, possible failure | Creative outlet, potential income |
Now, instead of letting fear make your decisions, you’re making them with clarity.
Look at the risks, assess the rewards, and decide if you can handle the worst-case scenario.
Can you? If yes, stop hesitating.
My Leap of Faith (And Yours)
I know what it’s like to be terrified of leaving something stable.
I was in a software company for 7 years, reporting to the COO.
Safe, predictable, and... stuck.
If I had stayed in that comfort zone, you wouldn’t be reading this.
I took the leap, calculated the risks, and the payoff was huge.
50% pay bump and the flexibility to work from home.
I wouldn't know if I didn’t try.
Now, let me ask you this: What will you regret more? Staying comfortable or missing out on something incredible because you were too scared to try?
Practical Steps to Start Taking Risks
Start Small – No one’s saying you need to uproot your life overnight. But take one step outside your comfort zone today—apply for that job, sign up for that course, start that project.
Use the RRR Method – Anytime you hesitate, come back to the RRR table. It’ll keep you grounded and remind you why you’re making these choices.
Look at Past Regrets – Think about what you’ve missed out on by staying in your comfort zone. Isn’t it time you stopped letting fear dictate your life?
Time to Make a Decision
Are you going to stay stuck in that same boring pool, just floating?
Or are you going to take the leap, get out, and start making waves?
The choice is yours, but here’s what I know for sure: Staying comfortable will never lead to growth.
Start taking risks—calculated risks—and watch how your life changes.
What’s the worst that could happen? Probably not as bad as you think.
Until next time, don’t settle for mediocre.
Chase something amazing.
Cheers,
Vikko
